Often our lives are woven together through colorful and expressive threads, like a patchwork quilt passed down from generation to generation. The hands that clasp the quilt do so for warmth, security, and comfort. It is for a similar purpose that The Farm Foundation 723 was founded.
On July 23, 2018, The Farm Foundation’s Founder and Chief Executive Operator, Rich (Patch) Ryan received a liver from a donor, who’s heroic choice of organ donation changed Rich’s life forever. Not only was he blessed with the gift of life, he was also handed the responsibility for taking care of this liver as if he were the adopted parent. And in a symbolic tribute, he started The Farm Foundation 723 to honor his beloved donor and promote awareness of the miracle of organ donation.
As Rich progressed through the challenges and triumphs of the recovery process, it became abundantly clear that the purpose of this organization must be to touch the lives of those who are vulnerable, hurting, and struggling with illness, addiction, and adversity. Trials that were all too familiar to Rich.
Upon reflection, Rich realized his path to victory was rooted in his youth - on a farm - where hard work and dedication defined who he was as a young man. Integrity and perseverance are character traits that he parlayed into the purpose of the Foundation. It was important to him that values intrinsic to his life’s work come from those instilled in him through the toiling and cultivation of the land, his patch 723.
Have you ever been in an airplane and watched the ground pass and change beneath you as you soar off into the clouds? Each patch of land is distinctly and beautifully unique, like the patchwork of a handmade quilt. Sowed together lovingly by the hands of the Creator.
After years of neglect and misuse, patch 723 became overrun with thorns, thistles, and weeds. This was all too reminiscent of Rich’s own life. Each setback, difficulty, and tragedy were painfully fabricating a life of despair for Rich. He was dying inside and he knew it.
That’s when hope intervened. Through the dark and stormy skies, a ray of light shone through. Because of the selfness act of a stranger, Rich’s life was spared. It is in this vein that the origin for the Foundation began, with the mission of touching the lives of those who need a little help in their patch of soil.
Second chances are not given to make things right. But are given instead to prove that we could be better even after we fall.
